David Jones & Charlie Smalls ("Some Like It Lukewarm")

[While Charlie Smalls plays the piano, David sings a song which they composed" "Girl Named Love.]

David [singing]:I know a girl her name is Love.
She is a girl that I dream of.
She gives me love I never knew.
She'd show you how to love me too.

Charlie:La da da da la da da da.....

David [to Charlie]:Hey, Charlie, Charlie, listen, listen. I want to ask you a question, man. Oh, first of all, let me introduce you to the people. [to the people] This is Charlie Smalls. He's a friend of mine from New York, and now he's out in California and we're writing songs together, and this is one of our first songs. [to Charlie] Right?

Charlie:Right.

David:Tell me! Why don't I have soul? You've known me all these years! Why don't I have soul?

Charlie:You do have soul, but I have to explain it to you, ah, rhythmically. That's the only way I can really talk, is in music. Your soul would eminate on the accented beats 1 and 3, where my soul eminate on the accented beats 2 and 4. And to give you a good example of that, The Beatles...

David:Yeah?

Charlie:...play hard and funky, on the 1 and 3! [David laughs] Really, Ringo plays the hardest 1 and 3 I've ever heard in my life. Now if you clap 4, I'll show you.

[David and Charlie clap 4 beats each.]

David and Charlie:1-2-3-4. 1-2-3-4.

[David continues to clap 4 beats; Charlie scats.]

Charlie:Um-BAH!-oom-oom-BAH! Um-BAH!-oom-oom-BAH! Um-BAH!-oom-oom-BAH!

David:Yeah, right!

Charlie:The whole thing! It swings! As long as it swings, it's soul!

David:I---that's 1 and 3, right?

Charlie:Right. Now, in the example of 2 and 4 would be more of The Motown Sound.

David:Now 1 and 3's...1 and 3's like, it's white soul, right?

Charlie:Right. Exactly.

David:And the 2 and 4 is The Motown?

Charlie:It's Motown Soul brothers You know, give you some...2 to 5 over here...

[David, laughing, switches places with Charlie in front of the piano.]

Charlie:...it would be The...The Motown Sound, which would be, if...clap again.

[David and Charlie clap 4 beats each.]

Charlie:1-2-3-4. 1-2-3-4.

[David continues to clap 4 beats; Charlie scats.]

Charlie:Um-BAH!-skidiggy-doom-BAH! Um-BAH!-skidiggy-doom-BAH! Um-BAH!-skidiggy-doom-BAH!

David:Oh, yeah! The accent now is on the 2 and the 4!

Charlie:No, I almost get carried away. Excuse me, I'm sorry. [David laughs.] But you can do the same thing if you take a tube, soul which is emanating from Brazil, and you play.

[Charlie gives the tube to David, which he plays while the former scats.]

Charlie:Um-be-doo-be-um-be-doo-be-doo-be, Um-be-doo-be-um-be-doo-be-doo-be, Um. 1...[David scats.]..2...1...

David:1-2! Yeah, right!

Charlie:Right! [plays piano again]

David:1-2! Yeah, right!

Charlie:Wanna try it again?

David [singing]:I know a girl her name is Love.
She is a girl that I dream of.
She gives me love I never knew.
She'd show you how to love me too.

Charlie:La da da da la da da da.....

David:It's all the same right? So everyones got soul.

Charlie:Everybody's got soul.

David:It's just a different kind of soul.

Charlie:Swing it and you got soul, man.

David:A 1 and 3 and a 2 and 4. And this is a 1 and 2.

Charlie:Everybody swing!

David:Hey!

David [singing]:La da da da la da da da!
La da da da la da da da!

[David continues shaking the tube while Charlie scats.]

Charlie:Um-BAH!-skidiggy-doom-BAH! Um-BAH!-skidiggy-doom-BAH! Um-BAH!-skidiggy-doom-BAH!

David:Hey!

[David and Charlie scat while the scene irises out.]
